But what if there are challenges? What if they have mental health or behavioral health issues, how can we as parents support the healthy development of our youth? We shouldn’t blindly assume schools’ support services and the skills they taught necessarily generalize to less structured environments students encounter after graduation. As such, it’s not uncommon for young adults to need extra counsel as they head to the next stage in their lives.

The solution? Be proactive! Seek support and guidance, whether they are moving on from regular education, special education or a therapeutic boarding school setting. Transition planning is such an important factor in helping our children as they try to find what motivates them, what their passion is, or what outside support they need to get there.

Whether it be individual and/or family counseling, coaching with executive functioning, vocational training or support in post-secondary to manage stress and anxiety. By being actively involved and soliciting transitional support and planning in an outpatient setting, parents can play a beneficial role in helping their children make the most seamless and successful transition into young adulthood that is both healthy and functional.
